An Evaluation of Scatterometer-Derived Oceanic Surface Pressure Fields

چکیده
Oceanic surface pressure fields are derived from the NASA Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) surface wind vector measurements using a two-layer similarity planetary boundary layer model in the midlatitudes and a mixed layer planetary boundary layer model in the tropics. These swath-based surface pressure fields are evaluated using the following three methods: 1) a comparison of bulk pressure gradients with buoy pressure measurements in the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans, 2) a least squares difference comparison with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) surface pressure analyses, and 3) a parallel spectral analysis of the QuikSCAT and ECMWF surface pressure fields. The correlation coefficient squared between scatterometer-derived pressure fields and buoys is found to be R 0.936. The average root-mean-square difference between the scatterometer-derived and the ECMWF pressure fields ranges from 1 to 3 hPa, depending on the latitude and season, and decreases after the assimilation of QuikSCAT winds in the ECMWF numerical weather prediction model. The spectral components of the scatterometer-derived pressure fields are larger than those of ECMWF surface analyses at all scales in the midlatitudes and only at shorter wavelengths in the tropics.

Estimation of Large Scale Wind Fields over Oceanic Areas around India Using Insat Derived Cloud Motion Vectors in Conjunction with Ship/buoy Data and Scatterometer Data
The low-level Cloud Motion Vectors (CMVs) derived from INSAT data are useful for estimating sea surface wind and ultimately wind stress over the large oceanic areas within reasonable limits of accuracy. CMVs are compared to ship/buoy observations collected over the oceans and the results indicate that low-level CMVS could be used to estimate surface winds to an r.m.s. accuracy of about 3m/sec i...

[1] A wavelet-based method is described for incorporating swaths of surface pressure derived from scatterometer measurements into surface pressure analyses obtained from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The resulting modified pressure fields are used to identify low-pressure centers over the Southern Ocean and to build statistics of midlatitude cyclones during 7 y...
متن کاملThe Wavenumber Spectra of Scatterometer-derived Winds
Spaceborne scatterometers are the only proven method for global all-weather measurement of vector winds at the ocean’s surface. Such measurements are critical inputs in studies of oceanic circulation and air/seainteraction where the time variability of the surface wind field and the wind stress curl drive the ocean; hence, our interest in the spectrum of the surface wind field. In this paper we...

[1] Ocean surface wind vectors with improved spatial resolutions were derived from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) satellite. They allow us to examine the details and extent of oceanic influence of a Santa Ana event a strong offshore and downslope wind in southern California that may spread wide fires, damage properties, and endanger a...
متن کاملEvaluation of Early Morning Heating Rate-derived Soil Moisture in Southern Europe
The soil moisture content is of great importance for numerical weather forecasts and has been identified as one of the parameter products of EUMETSAT’s Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (Land SAF). Soil moisture strongly affects the surface energy balance and therefore near surface temperature and humidity. Conversely, temperature observations may be used to infer the soil...
